Academic Internship

PSYC 369: Practicum in Clinical Psychology

&

PSYC 371: Clinical Supervision in Psychology

(From the syllabus) These courses work simultaneously to integrate academic and practical skills by requiring students to work at an approved practicum site at a community agency under the supervision of staff at the practicum site and by attending a weekly seminar at ODU that focuses on clinical and professional issues.

I gained extensive knowledge about clinical ethics in psychology and human services. I developed a full comprehension of the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and practiced a series of ethical decision-making scenarios.

During my internship, I shadowed the crisis coordination process, practiced case management, engaged in direct-client interactions, and gained program development experience. Working at the HER shelter increased my technical knowledge in the field, creating case notes, computer software proficiency, and prioritizing tasks.

My education in leadership and diversity provided me an opportunity to positively influence others, build rapport, and maintain healthy client and coworker relationships. Direct-client interactions allowed me to practice essential counseling skills for human service professionals, such as active listening, solution-focused questioning, and empathic responses.
